Writing for This Week

Greetings everyone!

For this week's writing, you will have to write about this topic:

You will need to write five paragraphs; no more and no less.  Please try to write exactly five.   The essay is due on Sunday, August 5th by midnight.

Good luck and I will see you in a week!

Articles!

Greetings everyone!

Let's talk about articles. There are two types of articles in the English language; indirect and direct.  Indirect articles are "a" and "an," and direct articles are "the."

Remember, indirect articles are used with nouns that are:
  • General,
  • Singular,
  • And a count noun.
Direct articles are used with:
  • Specific nouns
  • Can be used with singular or plural nouns
  • And can be used with count and uncount nouns.
  • As long as it is specific.
We looked at three different parts of how to use articles.  First was with known and unknown nouns.  The first time you introduce a noun, you use an indirect article.  The second time the noun is mentioned (and every other time after that), you use a direct article.

The second one was unique nouns.  When a noun is unique because it is one of a kind (the sun), or we know that we are talking about something specific (I bought a new computer. The computer is amazing.), we use a direct article.

Lastly, we talked about plural count nouns in general.  When we are talking about a group of things in general, we use NO article. (I really hate sweets.    OR      Turtles make wonderful pets.)

Look over what we studied, and try to use it in your next writing.

Cheers!
