May 30th - Writing and Finals

Hello everyone,
We talked a lot about writing today. I hope that the outlines we worked on in class helped you start your essays.

First, let me tell you about this week's writing assignment:

For writing #7, you will need to choose one topic
  1. What is the most popular sport in your country? Why do you think it is the most popular?
  2. What is something that is very popular in your country? Why is it popular?
This assignment has to be at least 5 paragraphs long, and it is due Tuesday, June 5th. We will edit the essay in class; practicing peer editing.

The second topic we talked about today is our writing final. Here is the information:

For our final, you will choose one essay you have written this quarter and edit it into a final draft. A final draft has very little to no mistakes and will use everything we learned this quarter. The final draft is due June 22nd, and we will be working on these every Wednesday for the rest of June.

I am looking forward to reading a lot of great essays.

Tuesday, May 22nd

Greetings everyone,

Today, we worked on writing and structure.

We looked at using the words "some", "any", and "no" in positive/negative sentences (structure 5-1).  Please remember that "any" and "no" share similar meanings.  It is just that "any" must have a negative word (like not) in the sentence and "no" does not.  For example:

I did not have any pants on today.   = negative sentence/negative meaning
I have no pants on today.                 = positive sentence/negative meaning

After practicing, we then moved to using "some" and "any" in questions (structure 5-2).  Please review these units as we will continue tomorrow at the beginning of class.

Also, be ready to speak tomorrow for our impromptu speeches. :)

See you then!

Monday, May 21st

Greetings everyone!

Today, we finished the vocabulary you started in class.  All the vocabulary can be found HERE.

Also, it looks like my last post about our writing assignment last week did not get posted.  Therefore, I have extended the deadline for the writing assignment to Wednesday, May 23th by midnight.  Here is what you have to write:

Pick one movie, book, or singer that you like. Please explain why you like it and why Adam should listen/read/watch it.  Remember, you only need to pick one thing.

Good luck everyone, and have a nice day.

Structure and Writing

Greetings everyone,

Today, we learned about articles and complex sentences.

We reviewed your earlier lecture on articles, and practiced using them.

We also reviewed simple sentences (Structure 3-1), compound sentences (structure 3-2), and learned about complex sentences (structure 3-3).

For your homework, please do the eight practice sentences at the bottom of structure 3-3 and bring them to class.

Good work everyone.  I'll see you tomorrow.

Welcome back from Midterm Week

Hi all,

I hope that you are doing well.  I am happy to see some new faces in our class.  Let's work together to finish up a great quarter.

Today, we introduced Unit 4: Literature and studied the new vocabulary for this unit.  We went through the words; writing sentences for each.

Please remember to do your homework tonight.  You must pick 20 new vocabulary words, find synonyms for those words, and then write one sentence each.  Please bring the homework to class tomorrow morning.

Thank you for working hard today.  I'll see you tomorrow.

Midterm Week ⁿoⁿ

Greetings everyone,

This week is midterms.  I hope that everyone is studying very hard.

Today, we studied other forms of simple sentences and learned about compound sentences.  Taking what you learned from today's lesson, I want you to write a paragraph about a topic of your choice.  This writing assignment is due on Sunday by midnight.

You can earn extra credit if you write a five paragraph essay, but you must use simple and compound sentences correctly to earn full points.

As for tomorrow, we will review the vocabulary from this quarter, and I will answer any questions you might have with the grammar.

Thank you for trying your best, and I will see you tomorrow.

A Day Full of Reading

Hi everyone!

Great job today.  Everyone worked very hard.  We worked on the reading 3-1 "Stories about Natural Disasters," and answered the questions in groups.

Tomorrow, there will be pizza for everyone during lunch, and we will work on a class project during the 1 o'clock hour.  As for the impromptu speeches, we will do them on Thursday before class discussions.

Thanks again, and I will see you tomorrow.
